It is important that everyone who owns or uses a computer should take the time out to make backups of any important files or programs they have which are resident on their computer systems. These programs should usually be backed up as well in order to prevent these computers from suffering from the adverse effects of what malware, spyware and other types of computer viruses can do. Rather than bearing the risks of losing your entire information making the necessary backup copies of your programs and information will easily protect you in the long run.

How can you lose your files?
Different occurrences can make you lose a whole lot of your computer programs and files. Your computer may get affected by a terrible virus or some spyware or malware that can do serious damage to your computer. Circumstances that are beyond your control may also affect the operation of your computer. An entire storm could make your computer malfunction if your computer isn’t protected against circumstances such as power surges. You could have the entire information on your computer wiped out and everything in it rendered unusable. Even a child can affect the operation of your computer. It is usually in your best interests to make backups of every file or program on your computer that is important in one way or the other to you.

What types of files should you backup?
If you’re concerned about what sort of programs and files you should be backing up, the answer is quite simple. Simply take the time out to back up any files and programs on your computer which you feel are important. Most people usually take files that relate to one form of financial information or the other as the most important. Other people consider project files, address books, pictures, software or music as equally important. To some people the scheduling software in their computers hold some important information that should be backed up as well.

How can you backup your computer files?
Backing up computer files can be done in a whole lot of ways. The simplest of these ways is usually to take the time out to back up your computer files every single week or every month depending on the frequency with which you make use of your computer. Some people burn the information that they need to backup on their CD-ROMs. People who have computers that have no CD-ROM drive can easily take the time out and purchase an external hard drive in order to store the information that they want to back up. External hard drives differ in terms of the available range of memory sizes. Some of these hard drives are so small that they can fit onto a key holder. If you need external hard drives, the prices you pay largely differ according to the requirements that you have. Small external hard drives can usually be purchased for prices that are as little as twenty dollars. Larger versions go for hundreds of dollars and more. The space and size requirements are ultimately what determine how much you pay. Most external hard drives can easily fit into your computer via the USB port.

Where should you keep your computer’s backup files?
When a computer has been backed up you should take the time out to keep the computer files in a location that is safe. You may also decide to get a different level of redundancy and backup your computer in multiple ways. You can then simply store these backups in different places. Prevention is always a whole lot better than curative measures.

Whether you call them hackers, crackers or cyber criminals doesn’t matter. What does matter is whatever you call them – they’re looking for a way into your network!

You may not realize it but hackers are scanning your Internet connection looking for an opening.

What will they do if they find one? They’ll launch an attack against that opening to see if they can exploit a vulnerability that will allow them to remotely execute some commands thereby giving them access to your network.

But it all starts with scanning your network.

Automated Tools Are a Wonderful Thing
Cyber criminals don’t scan each individual network on the Internet one by one. They have automated tools that randomly scan every IP address on the Internet.

Hackers aren’t lazy people – just very efficient. And very intelligent. The tools they use can be preloaded with a range of Internet addresses to scan. As this tool finds an Internet address with certain openings it produces a list of the address and the opening. This list is then fed into another tool that actively tries to exploit that opening with various programs. If no exploit works, the hacker’s program moves on to the next potential victim.

When you see the scanning activity in your firewall logs, you’ll know where you’re being scanned from and what they’re trying to target. Armed with that data you should check to see if you’re running software that uses that port and if it has any newly discovered openings. If you are using software listening on that scanned port and there is a patch available, you should have that patch applied immediately – because the hackers may know something you don’t.

NOTE: It’s been our experience that many businesses patch their Microsoft Windows software but rarely do they check for patches for all the other software used in the business.

As stated, you’ll see this activity in your firewall logs – that is, if someone is actually reviewing your firewall logs.
Oh, my firewall has logs?
However, when most business owners are asked about their firewall logs, the typical response is usually something like, “Oh, my firewall has logs?” Yes, all firewalls produce log files. Most of them only show what’s been blocked, which is like showing pictures of all the thieves that are in prison, while the bank down the street is being robbed.

Wouldn’t you want to see all traffic? This produces more work, but if your firewall only logs activity it knows about, you’re security is totally dependent on the ability of your firewall and the way it’s configured.
Many firewall companies want to reduce their number of tech support calls. Their business model revolves around having tech support available, but in the process they’re also seeking ways of reducing the number of times people call in. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when their products have fewer features, thus fewer benefits as a result – that is a bad thing.

Most firewalls designed for the small business market lack features that most small businesses would benefit from. Many of them have all the technical buzzwords like “deep packet inspection”, “spyware prevention”, “intrusion detection” and many others, however they don’t go into the level of detail needed to be effective.
First, many firewalls that are “designed” for small businesses start with companies that have 100 – 250 users. These might be considered small businesses by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but for technology purposes companies of this size have their own IT staff (96% do). Not just one IT person, but an IT staff which means that someone is probably responsible for security. If not, they’ll have someone train them in the proper setup, installation and monitoring of security appliances.

The businesses we consider small have anywhere from 3 – 50 PCs. The companies at the higher end of this scale might have someone dedicated to handling IT issues. But this person is usually so inundated with PC support issues that they have little time “left over” to effectively monitor firewall logs.

Toward the lower end of this scale, they usually have either an outside person or firm responsible or they have an employee who “is pretty good with computers” who has other responsibilities as well. Rarely will these small businesses have someone watching the firewall logs on a consistent basis. Someone might look them over if there’s an issue, but these logs rotate when filled so the valuable information might be lost before it’s ever reviewed. And that’s a shame. Without reviewing the logs you have no idea what or who is trying to get in with which or what.

An Example Log File
Let’s review some logs. This happens to be a log from a client. The columns are labeled accordingly. This report has been cleaned up to make it easier to explain and understand.

Date Time Source IP Source Port Destination IP Destination Port
06/18/2007 12:04:03.416 218.10.111.119 12200 55.66.777.1 6588
06/18/2007 12:16:05.192 41.248.25.147 4925 55.66.777.1 5900
06/18/2007 13:08:02.256 218.10.111.119 12200 55.66.777.1 6588
06/18/2007 13:22:10.224 58.180.199.163 4637 55.66.777.1 2967

What is this showing?
Well the first source IP (Internet) address is from Heilongjiang, a province in China. The destination is our client (mangled to protect the innocent) but the important data is the destination port. That identifies what they’re looking for.

Port 6588 can be a few different things. They could be scanning for a Trojan that uses that port. If their scan responds with the typical response of the remote access Trojan, they know they’ve found an infected system. Port 6588 can also be a proxy server (which we won’t describe here) with a recent bug. This bug makes it easy for a hacker to exploit thereby giving them remote access to the system running the proxy server software. The hackers system will tell them what service is listening on port 6588 so they know what tools to use to attack that port.

The second line in our log file above is from Africa. Port 5900 is VNC which is used by many, many system administrators to remotely connect to a system to perform maintenance on it. This software has had a few exploits and one just last year allowed the attacker to have remote control of the system with VNC installed without having to crack any passwords!

Line 3 has our friend from China back trying again. Same port. They must be trying a few exploits against this port. Maybe they know something that the general security community isn’t aware of yet.

On line 4 in our logs we see a new IP address in the source. This one is from Korea but notice it’s scanning port 2967. This happens to be the port that Symantec’s Anti-virus software listens on for new updates.
There is a known exploit which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unknown attack vectors. When hackers find this port they know exactly what exploit to try. In other words, the security software that is designed to protect systems is actually a way in for hackers due to a software bug. It could be that there is a new “hole” in Symantec’s software that hackers know about but Symantec doesn’t. The previous hole was patched so either the hackers are looking for yet unpatched Symantec software or they know of a new hole and are looking for ways to infect them.

Without reviewing your logs you have no idea what is trying to get into your network.
Without a properly configured firewall, this type of attack would surely get through. This happens to be a firewall we configured so we know of ports like this and we blocked outside access because this client does not use Symantec products.

When talking security with a business owner I always ask, “When was the last time your network was scanned for openings?” They usually respond with, “Never”. To which I reply, “Oh you’re wrong there. You’ve been scanned, you just don’t know by who!”

Regular scans of your network show you what the hackers are seeing of your network. It’s a simple process and should be performed at least once a month. The results should be presented to you in a very readable, understandable report.

What to Do Next
The first thing you should do is check your firewall to make sure it’s logging all activity. Then, your job is to start reviewing the logs either everyday or at a bare minimum, once a week. Some routers have the firewall “built-in”. I’ve often found these are very limited in their ability to protect. Even more limiting is their logging functionality. Typically these devices will only show what’s blocked. Often these router/firewalls have the option to have the logs emailed to someone when they’re filled up with entries. This is a nice option as you can have them directed to someone who will (should) review them in detail and notify you of any entries to be concerned with.

If your firewall doesn’t provide the level of detail described in this article, you should seriously consider upgrading. You can keep your existing router just turn off the firewall feature and buy a dedicated firewall.
Then you’ll know what the hackers know about your network.

Social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us and digg.com where share lists of user-created Internet bookmarks are grouped together (and other applications) are growing in popularity. And so is identity theft among the social bookmarking users.

What happens is that people rush to sign up for the social bookmarking sites. They register and mindless begin filling out their profiles, sharing lots of personal information like date of birth, complete name and contact information / location (email, phone number, personal photos) and more. However, people most often don’t use the privacy settings offered by the sites, as they should.

Not only that, social networking site users also post to forums, blogs and chats about when they’re leaving town and going on vacation. Other information that should remain confidential is often shared, too, like which banks are used online, which sites with shopping carts, etc.

The results are identity theft, online and off. Offline, thieves find out when people won’t be home and break in to steal things: information, valuables, etc. Online, thieves also break in and steal using personal info to access accounts and use identities for their own personal and financial gain.

Social Networking Safety Tips
Get and stay safe with social networking sites using these helpful tips:
1) Use the site’s privacy settings and only share your profile information with family and trusted friends.
2) Watch what you do list online, regardless of privacy settings. A thief can take your digital photo and all other info and use your identity. Don’t give them all that ammunition. Upload a favorite animal or flower image, for example, instead of your face. List the nearest large city instead of the small town where you live. Use a nickname, maiden name or other identity listing.
3) Do not discuss out of town issues online. Period. No one needs to know when you’re going on vacation or even on business trips. Tell the about the trips AFTER you return. And don’t ask others about their plans, either, encouraging them to post their private info.
4) Alert your family members, friends and others to these security issues to help others be and stay safe, too.
5) If a social networking site doesn’t look safe or you can’t figure out the privacy settings, don’t use it. Go somewhere safe.

Things are always changing and growing on the web. So only interact where it’s safest for you. Practice identity theft protection 24/7!

If you didn’t know this before, know it now. Hackers on the internet can steal your credit card details and use these details to buy anything they want over the internet. If you’re someone with a small credit card limit this might simply be a minor embarrassment or inconvenience. On the other hand if you have a large credit card limit and somebody racks up a huge amount of debt using your name and personal details, imagine the disaster. Think in terms of what you may be required to do in order to resolve the situation, if you agree with the majority who believe that prevention is always better than a cure, you may want to start protecting yourself from harm now rather than wait to be hit by disaster in the future. Modern day living requires modern day protection and these are just some of the few things that you should concern yourself with:

Simple spyware can get all of your information
Hackers can use a simple spyware program in order to detect everything that you do when you’re using your computer. These hackers can get access to all your passwords and collect your entire credit card information or information that can provide access to your bank accounts.

Sometimes it all starts with you clicking a tiny pop-up or a screensaver that looks so cute and makes you want to place it on your desktop. You install it and the next thin you know you have spyware right on your computer. Not every type of spyware is the malicious kind that steals personal information some types of spyware are actually harmless to a large degree. However do you want to take these sorts of chances with your computer?

When you’re out using the internet different types of threats exist out there. These types of threats include spyware, malware and worms. In order to get rid of these threats you need some powerful programs such as SpyBlaster, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Windows Defender. Some of these software programs can easily be downloaded directly from certain websites. Other programs can simply be purchased in computer stores or electronic stores. Some internet service providers actually supply you with software programs whose fees are usually part of your subscription fee. What you really have to remember is to make sure that you update these programs frequently enough to ensure maximal protection.

Trojan viruses open your computer wide up to hackers
Sometimes that nifty little program that you downloaded and installed on your computer is a nice little program. Sometimes it may just be a Trojan virus instead. These sorts of viruses usually mean business and can do serious damage to your computer system quite easily. Sometimes they help hackers steal any private information that you have stored on your computer. Some Trojan viruses just do simply annoying things like manipulating the door to your CD-ROM drive. With a good antivirus program you can easily scan through your entire computer and locate any of these Trojan viruses on your computer drives and eliminate them.

Computer users and computer owners have to understand the necessary tools that will keep your computers safe from harm. Different forms of harm exist and this includes different forms of viruses, spyware, malware, spam and other dangerous forms of software. If you are unaware of the safety level of your computer you may want to read more in the following article.

Anti-spyware and anti-malware software to protect your computer
Spyware and malware are some of the most harmful and irritating forms of viruses and worms that are available over the internet. When you want to ensure that you’re properly protected from the malware that exists in cyberspace, the best thing that you should do is make sure that you use some of the best software programs available on the market. You can use some of the trusted programs like Windows Defender, SpyBlaster and other programs like Webroot Spy Sweeper. You can easily get these programs by downloading them over the internet from the official websites of their creators. You can also get this software if your internet service provider provides you with the free software.

Any time your anti-spyware and anti-malware programs require an update you can’t necessarily depend on your ISP to come to your aid. You have to take it upon yourself to update your antivirus software. If you fail to take the time out to protect your computer from different threats out there you may lose much more than your computer hard drive. Online criminals can easily steal your personal information and use it to empty your bank accounts.

Firewalls for your computer
Different sorts of firewalls exist and the best types include software firewall such as Zone Alarm Pro easily prevent unauthorized entry by hackers and other criminals who want to access your computer. The lack of a good firewall leaves your front door open for these criminals to see just about everything you do on your home computer.

Virus protection software for your PC
The best thing that you need for the most secure sort of computer protection is antivirus software. There are a whole lot of antivirus programs available and these are some of the most popular options: Trend PC-cillin, Panda Antivirus, The Shield Pro, Bit Defender, Norton Antivirus, Kaspersky, and McAfee VirusScan.
A lot of these whole antivirus programs come with built-in firewalls. Most of them are usually quite easy to install and are easy to understand when you read the instructions. They can also run scheduled scans on your computer and get virus updates over the internet when necessary. If you’re the sort that doesn’t remember when to schedule scans this can help you out immensely.

Something that should be remembered whenever antivirus programs are being used is that you have to remember to check them often enough. Some of this software comes with free updates for a limited period but after that period you have to pay for additional months of updates. You should try to keep your computer updated while you can as a whole lot of viruses tend to come up on the radar each day.

Adware is a term used to describe software that will display those advertising banners you see popup when you are on the internet. Adware programs are many times designed to also collect information about a user on his or her pc. Information collected can include browsing habits or sites visited while on the computer. Adware is different from spyware in that spyware programs typically do not get the computer owner’s permission before they install themselves. The main purpose of an adware program is to display commercial advertisements to you at pre-determined intervals and from different internet server feeds.

Like adware, spyware also comes down from the internet and sends information about the user’s habits. But one of the major differences, as mentioned previously, is that spyware installs on the user’s computer and collects information about him or her without permission. The information sent is usually just data needed for a marketing campaign but sometimes they are designed to collect confidential information from the user.
Typically these applications are not a hybrid of the two types: adware and spyware. The main difference is because spyware installs without the user knowing of its existence and adware must always get the user’s permission. So basically one runs known and the other runs unknown.

And how did these adware and spyware applications come about? Software application development is an expensive business and developers need to fund their creation somehow. Development costs continued to rise and that is when software developers began using adware from within their applications to generate revenue for development of their main products. Spyware is used in this case too and there are even some software programs that eventually became totally free as their funding was covered by the revenues generated from adware.

Adware started out so innocently. It was just a way of delivering commercials to computer users and potential customers that were shown while some other software product was being used. But then it grew into a sophisticated piece of software that can gather information about a user and the hardware and software configuration used on his or her computer. Adware today can do things like alter your browser settings and behavior and start other computer applications that will run in background and send reports pertaining to your computer activity, browsing habits, and software versions you are running.

So let’s summarize what adware and spyware do. Here are a few of their activities:
•	Add links to assorted online magazines.
•	Collect information about a user’s browser activity for commercial and marketing purposes.
•	Updating web pages with new commercials (either adding new ones or just replacing those already there.
•	Actually changing the homepage in a browser so as to display a company’s own commercial.
•	Causing a computer to slow down so much that it is rendered ineffective.
•	This software has at times been reported to call telephone numbers at extremely high toll costs.
•	Access and take credit card information and passwords stored on the computer.
•	Install icons on your computer where you will wonder where they came from.

Everyone at some point in there life has been affected by the big “S” when it comes to the Internet. No I don`t mean surfing or another four letter word that I can`t use here. I am specifically talking about spam, and I do not mean that canned processed meat you can find at your local grocery store or market. (What is that stuff anyway?)

I am talking about spam, the unsolicited email. Many laws have been passed to curtail businesses from “spamming” people, or sending email to them that they just didn`t ask to receive. If you are reading this and you do send out unsolicited emails to people, rest assured you are breaking the law.

According to a recent article in PC World magazine by Grant Gross a, “temporary restraining order was issued by Federal Judge Morton Denlow of the Northern District Court of Illinois to Sill Neutraceuticals. The order calls for the company to stop sending unsolicited e-mail for its products.” Gross goes on to say, “It was issued following a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against the company and its owner Brain McDaid. In the lawsuit, FTC accuses Sill and McDaid of spare-marketing their Web sites based on false claims on the efficacy of their products.”

In defense of some companies that do send out large bulk emailing to market their products or services, they sometimes purchase large mailing lists, from list servers or brokers and other companies that collect email addresses. They are told that these emails were collected via opt-in lists.

An opt-in list means a person agreed to receive emails from companies and then “opted in” by entering their email address. What happens a lot of times are that these list brokers (who sell the email addresses) gather a lot of these emails unethically by crawling the Internet and indexing pages that email addresses appear and then do a technique called “scraping” to retrieve the email address off of the page and store it into their own database.

These businesses then buy these lists, and spam is born. Here are some ways to protect yourself if you are going to use email as a marketing campaign. First, whether you have a Blog, website or whatever, you should have an area where your visitors can enter their email address to receive your newsletter. Always, always, always have an “opt out” option on your newsletter. It goes a long way to the consumer if they know they can stop receiving your email. Second, if you are going to buy a list, which I don`t recommend you do, but if you do, make sure you purchase from a reputable company, and ask them where and how they obtain those email addresses.

If you are a consumer and like to sign up for the occasional newsletter from companies who sell products or talk about their services, then I recommend that you sign up for a free email account from sites like Yahoo or Google. Use that email address to receive your newsletters. The newsletters won`t clutter up your personal inbox and your “real” email address gets far less exposure on the Internet.

Email programs such as Outlook and even the free email accounts have options where you can setup spam and junk folders as well as create block lists and so on. There are ways to combat receiving or at least keep it under control and of course if you own a business, not falling into the trap of sending it. Use these tips above and you are sure to not get aggravated by it.
Seriously what is that canned meat anyway?

There are often questions asked when changing or buying a new computer about the process of Hard Drive Wipe. The process for wiping or cleaning your personal data is quite simple as one might think. To completely wipe off your data you will have to write over the data. Simply reformatting the drive or just deleting all the files will not help.

Fortunately there are a number of inexpensive and free wipe programs, which are also called as shedders can cover the data with random pattern or zeroes, which makes the data restoration software unreadable. However, there are some machines that can recover the data that has been written over only a few times. This is where the secure erase standards like the department of defense 5220.22-M will have to be referred. The specification of this read as, if you overwrite the drive three times according to the specifications it would be difficult to recover the data. However, a number of professionals would recommend you to overwrite the data seven times to ensure you have completely wiped off your hard drive making it completely unrecoverable. Sometimes reading the data that has been overwritten by a shredder would require expensive hardware, so if you are not worried about the professional data thefts then a careful overwriting is also not required.

One thing that your must always keep in mind is that just deleting your sensitive file or data will not protect you fully. This is because there may be unidentified copies of your file or data that can exist in some unused part of your swap files or in the hard rive and can also be in other possible locations. You can be on a safer side if you just wipe off your entire area of your hard drive or you can just go the definite route and clean up your entire hard drive. If you want to wipe off specific files and the free space of your hard drive then there are a number of software’s that can help your and even software’s to overwrite your hard drive three times.
If you want to get rid of your old hard drive or want to sell off your old computer it is very important that you take maximum precautions in cleaning off all your personal and sensitive files or data before selling off your hard drive. Although it is very difficult to recover the lost data on any hard drive it is not also impossible. However, data can be recovered at some degree. This task can be made impossible, if you follow proper specifications. One thing you should always keep in mind is that deleting files or data or just formatting your hard drive is not sufficient to completely wipe off your hard drive. To be sure that you have completely wiped off you fines you should use a erasing or wiping service. There are tools to help you clean off your hard drive, which will overwrite every sector on your hard drive. One of the most important things you must remember before selling off your hard drive or computer is preparing your hard drive or emptying it to be on a safer side.

People who have a computer should make it a point of duty to buy some of the best computer security products on the market. There are a number of such products such as antivirus software products, anti-spyware, pop-up blockers and a number of other programs. A number of popular programs exist in each category of computer protection software for your own particular use.

Virus protection software
A large number of companies market different versions of highly effective antivirus software. Some of the best computer antivirus programs include software programs like The Shield Pro, Kaspersky, McAfee VirusScan, Bit Defender, Panda Antivirus and Trend PC-Cillin.

One of the more popular versions of ant-virus programs is The Shield Pro. The Shield Pro is antivirus software that comes together with a firewall offered as part of the application. It is a popular option for computer users who have no idea how to use an antivirus program properly. The program performs certain tasks automatically such as updating and scanning your computer, if in any case you forget to scan your computer, the program will do it automatically. It only takes up a little space on your hard drive and most other software programs take up a lot of space on your computer. This doesn’t take its toll by slowing down your computer system.

Anti-spyware software
A lot of antispyware programs exist on the market and they are all equally capable of getting rid of any spyware that is resident on your computer. A number of popular anti-spyware programs include options such as: Webroot Spy Sweeper, Spy Blaster as well as the Windows Defender. A lot of these programs can be purchased at any stores that sell computers or over the internet. When newer antispyware programs become available you also receive advance notification and the ability to download these programs over the internet. Some internet service providers supply these programs to their subscribers free of charge.

Firewalls
Most of the newer antivirus programs usually come with firewalls included as part of the package. In the case that these antivirus software programs don’t come bundled with firewalls you can easily opt for software programs such as Zone Alarm Pro. This will help stop computer hackers from getting access into your computer. A firewall is the border between your computer and the public internet.

Security kits
Padlock security tags that come along with your laptop or computer are becoming a whole lot popular in the world today. These computer tags are devices that allow you to seal off your hard drive with a combination lock so that no one can steal your computer hard drive or other cards that you have stored on your system.
All the top security products are meant to protect you and your computer but they only work if you take the time out to make sure they’re properly been maintained and updated where necessary. Complete protection is only possible when you update your computer and programs as frequently as possible. Every aspect of computer security that is personal is your headache to manage.

Nowadays, it is quite essential to take necessary safety measures to safeguard you as well as your products from the risk of stealing information, since it is becoming far easier for persons to share their digital products. Now information theft is akin to a computer security risk. It refers to lifting a person’s private or classified information. Once this is gone, the damage caused is far more extensive than when computer software or hardware is stolen. Home or business users both stand a risk of information stealing.

A case in point is a spiteful person pinching credit cards in order that he can conduct illegal transactions, charged to another individual’s account. In case information is transferred over a network, it has a greater probability of being intercepted by spiteful users. Now every computer that lies in your data path can observe what you transmit, and in addition, they can view what you receive. Many companies attempt to put an end to information being stolen through means such as user identification and verification checks. These controls are great for safeguarding computers within the company’s premises. But in order to safeguard information on the Web as well as on the networks, companies make use of some encryption methods.

Encryption is the process of altering data so that it becomes practically unreadable. Obfuscated code is kind of encryption software. It’s a programming language, which is very difficult to read. Now, encrypted data is just like any other kind of data since you can transmit it by means of plenty of available choices, but reading it requires you to decipher or decrypt it into something more readable. All through the process of encryption, the input or the unencrypted data is called plaintext and the output or the encrypted data is called cipher text. In order to encrypt information, a programmer changes the plaintext to cipher text by means of some sort of encryption key. Now an encryption key refers to the programmed formula, which the person receiving the data avails of to decipher the cipher text. A diverse range of algorithm or encryption methods is available. But, with the encryption key formula, several of these techniques will be applied.

A few businesses employ available software, whereas others create their own. Every time a person transmits information online, for instance, by means of an email, they have no idea who might misuse it, or even to whom the email could perhaps be forwarded. This is precisely the reason why it is not considered prudent to pass on classified information online. But, a person can take necessary precautions by means of encrypting the confidential information, or even having it digitally signed. Centurion Soft Secure Protection and Pretty Good Piracy (PGP) are some well-known email encryption software. Pretty Good Piracy basically is called freeware. This signifies that individuals can employ it for their private requirements but definitely not for pure commercial reasons. This can be freely downloaded.

A digital signature refers to a sort of encrypted code, which an individual, website, or a company affixes to electronic documents to ensure that the individual really is the person he alleges to be. In all probability the code comprises of the name of the user as well as a hash, generally consisting of a portion of the message. Now a hash refers to a sort of mathematical formula, which creates content from a particular message, and therefore it is not similar to a message. Then the recipient needs to produce a fresh hash from the message received and match it against the digital signature in order to ensure that they tally correctly. The chief reason behind employing digital signatures unquestionably is to ensure a fraudster does not take part in the transaction. Hence, digital signatures assist in limiting e-mail scams. Besides, a digital signature too can ensure that the message contents have not been tampered with. A number of web browsers make use of encryption, which is about a forty-bit encryption, and of an extremely low level. An assortment of browsers too makes available a 128-bit encryption. This has considerably high levels of protection due to the longer encryption key. Now certain vital places that need exceptionally high security such as online retailers and banks require at the very least a 128-bit encryption. Next, a secure site is a website, which effectively makes use of encryption techniques to safeguard information. A secure site avails of digital certificates with security protocols.

Now the two well-known security protocols are the secure HTTP and the secure sockets layer. A digital certificate refers to a notice that authenticates that a website or a user is genuine or not a dupe. Several e-commerce websites generally have digital certificates. Now a certificate authority (CA) refers to an authorized individual or company, who possesses the necessary power to issue and validate digital certificates. A number of websites offer digital certificates. Some well known ones are Go daddy www.godaddy.com, VeriSign http://www.verisign.com/, Thawte http://www.thawte.com/ and Digicert http://www.digicert.com/. Generally, digital certificates contain information like username and the certificates’ serial number. Incidentally, the information contained in digital certificates too is encrypted. Then, the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) ensures that every detail that is exchanged between clients and servers is encrypted. SSL too entails that the client possess a digital certificate, in order that the web browser communicates securely with the concerned client. Now the web pages using SSL will normally start with https instead of http. SSL is present in a 40-bit as well as a 128-bit encryption. Next, Secured HTTP (S-HTTP) permits individuals to select encryption for data being exchanged between clients and servers. It is important that when making use of S-HTTP, the server as well as the client needs to possess a digital certificate. Although this renders S-HTTP tougher to use as opposed to SSL, nevertheless it is much more secure. Companies that are required to validate clients, as in the case with online banking companies, avail of S-HTTP.

Moreover, mobile users too can access computer networks via a virtual private network. Every time a mobile user successfully logs on to a central office by means of some sort of regular Internet link, a virtual private network (VPN) permits the cellular user to have a secure link. VPNs encrypt information when passing from either other mobile devices or a notebook computer in order that it avoids interception. Whatever be the security method, it is always advisable to employ the best protection – a backup. This ensures that there is no loss of data from a number of sources like a system failure for instance. Now a backup is just a backup of particular files programs, or disks. It can be availed of as a replacement for the original, in case it is lost, damaged or infected. Now if a file is damaged, it can be replaced by restoring it. This makes copies of the back up files and places them in their original location in the computer.
